THE SERAPH

This is one of my better known pieces. I took my time on it and tried a lot of new techniques. The use of obscured and painterly areas, the oversized flowers, and large metallic wings would later become fixtures in my visual style.

I remember spending so much time on the model, but being frustrated near the end because something just wasn’t clicking. I tried adding some flowers and it was a bit of a “Eureka” moment, now I feature them in many scenes pieces. You can see this anguish and revelation in the time-lapse below.

The same can be said for the wings, though they might seem minor. I pay a lot of attention to the visual movement of my pieces. The thinner wires on the outside are really useful for helping with this, but I tried adding some angular wings for this one, inspired by the biblical Seraph angel’s design. It worked out great since they basically function like giant arrows, and can really help with the overall visual flow and guide eye movement..
